How to use your wedding cake to create the wedding you’ve always dreamed of

Couples pay hundreds of pounds for a beautiful wedding cake that ends up, more often than not, being put in a dark corner of their venue, on a stand that totally clashes with the style of the wedding, and perched on a creased tablecloth that looks like it hasn’t been aired for months.

Your wedding cake should help making your wedding the day you’ve always wanted, no matter the size or style of your wedding. It should be seen as the masterpiece that it is, instead of being relegated to a second thought, making you waste hundreds of pounds on something that is not showcased as the work of art it is.

Here are my top tips on how to use your wedding cake to turn your day into the fairy tale you’ve always dreamed of.

2- Choose a beautiful display around your cake

Every little thing counts, and will either serve or give your cake a disservice - the table it is put on, the cake stand, the tablecloth and runners used, and potential props.

This is something that is often overlooked by couples as venues tend to push a small and simple trestle table, covered in a white tablecloth and a vintage silver cake stand. If that is what floats your boat, you can absolutely go for that - but it will probably not be the best display of your cake and help get it from pretty to absolutely stunning.

You can use a beautiful cake stand, vases, candles and candlesticks, gorgeous bamboo silk runners - but you can also use a special table or console (if your table is gorgeous, do not hide it with a tablecloth!), or a plinth.

Flowers can be used at the feet of your table or plinth, signs can be used around or on your table, as menus or little food related quotes; this will all add up to making a bigger impact and delight your guests and yourselves.

4- Place your table with intention in your venue

Instead of leaving your venue to place the cake where they usually place it (out of the way and hidden), think about where you want to put your table - this will massively impact how beautiful it will look. Things to think about include - what you want as a backdrop, how will the light be around it, and where it should go if you want your guests to be able to see and admire it when they enter the room.

1- The obvious - have a stunning cake

The size and design of your cake do not matter, as long as it aligns with what you love - people choosing to go for a design because that is what they’ve seen at a cousin’s wedding or on Pinterest repeatedly will not help turning your day into a meaningful experience - you should choose your cake with intention, fitting with the rest of your wedding or your personality.

No matter the size and design of your wedding or your wedding cake, you deserve for it to be a dreamy day and have the cake of your dreams, as well as the cake maker who will listen to what you love.

3- Display more than one cake

Turn your cake table into a full blown cake and desserts table. Not only do they give more options to guests in terms of textures and flavours, but they look even better because abundance looks incredibly satisfying. Having multiple colours, textures, shapes, heights, will attract your guests like bees to honey as it will stimulate all their senses, while complimenting and complementing your wedding cake.

5- Think outside the box

Your cake doesn’t have to be in the reception area - you could very well have your dinner, and then get everyone to go outside to see the cake in a totally different setting…

Consider the aesthetics you love, how you want your guests to feel, how you want to feel yourselves - this is applicable for the whole of your wedding planning journey.
